Q: My girlfriend and I have been dating exclusively for three months. Her birthday is coming up, and I’m unsure what I should give her as a birthday present. I don’t want to spend too much money, setting the bar too high this early in our relationship. I also don’t want her to think I’m bad gift-giver. What would be a good gift for this stage of our relationship? -Brian, 27

A: Brian, this is a great question! I think a lot of people have anxiety about gift-giving early on in a relationship. If you are the first of the two of you to give a gift, it makes things even harder. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be a difficult task.

Most couples are still in the “dating” stage of their relationship after three months. By this, I mean that you are probably spending a lot of your time together going on dinner dates or having drinks at your favorite places. It’s appropriate at this point to give a gift that is an experience as opposed to a tangible object.

(Flowers are a great gift at this stage, as well. Showing your girlfriend that you like her by having flowers delivered to her workplace will also present you as an awesome guy to her friends and co-workers.)

Pick a place to take her to a nice dinner, or get tickets to a concert or event that you will both enjoy. Planning for the future by gifting an experience will show your girlfriend that you enjoy spending time with her and you see your relationship lasting beyond the three-month mark. Good luck, and happy birthday to your girlfriend!
